    Edward Weston said we don't photograph things. We photograph their characteristics. The best street portraits do that. It can be the sadness of an elderly woman sitting on a park bench on Sunday morning, heavily made up and wearing her best dress. It can be the joy of a Paris busker mingling with some Asian tourists. It can be the weary gaze of a cleric in Jerusalem. It can be the concentration of a mime in Times Square applying his makeup. Such is the world of street portraits.
