This project examines individuality versus societal conformity through self-portraits. Growing up in Cyprus and moving to the U.S., I struggled to belong, fostering self-loathing and regret. Shot on my Miami balcony, changing natural light mirrors the tension between personal softness and societal harshness. A blank shirt, mask, and digital distortions symbolize lost identity and artificial self-modification. Ultimately, the series reveals the futility of hiding one’s true self to fit in.
Bio Yiorgos Michael was born in Cyprus and lives in the US. His work consists of photographic essays inspired by personal experiences and deal with themes like aging, identity, and social norms. These narratives fuse deliberately captured images with moments of serendipity, allowing unexpected elements to enhance the storytelling with surprise and discovery. This blend of intentional and spontaneous imagery juxtaposes the representational with the abstract, and the real with the mythical. The result is a tension between ambiguity and clarity, drawing viewers into engaging with the narrative.
