This 1970s municipal boiler house, located in the city centre of Valmiera, northern Latvia, has been transformed into temporary premises for the Valmiera Drama Theatre, with an eventual use as a contemporary art space. From concept to completion, a theatre hall and ancillary spaces were developed in just two months, preserving the building's character and the aesthetics of its existing details. The result is a clear, industrial interior, a stark departure from traditional theatre opulence. Kurtuve exemplifies successful collaboration among architects, theatre artists and municipality.
