Using real flowers in these pieces reflect the complexities of being human, the struggles and the contradictions, the beauty and the darkness. I use Pansy Violas in my work as the pansy is mentioned in Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Ophelia, who is mad with grief at the death of her father rants, "And there is pansies, that's for thoughts". Additionally the word pansy comes from the French 'pensee' meaning 'thought'. Pieces are named after mental health medications, which are reminiscent of names of Greek gods/Latin stories, as if i'm creating my own pantheon of gods, the gods of mental health.
