Diane Arbus's work explores the relationship between photographer and subject. I never try to achieve this kind of insight in my street portraits. I'm not interested in any connection between me and the people on the other side of the viewfinder. I want to see who these people are even if it's just for a moment in time and who they are has nothing to do with me. Street performers are an exception. I chat them up because who they are is wrapped up in their connection with their audience. But mostly I see myself as an onlooker with no link to my subjects. That's my take on street portraits.
