ARTROVERT is artist-curator Anita Dube’s studio consisting of a two-room residence atop large volume workspaces. Her motivations for an extroverted expression and mediated privacies are to share her creative and domestic lives with her neighbours in a growing peri-urban precinct. In form, two materially contrasting looping bands, of distressed concrete and ceramic mosaic, unravel the private to the public. A grey steel armature acts as a gallery allowing multi-level views of the exhibits and accessibility to the workspace. The panels of the entire side facade swivel to share finished art publicly. They also act as louvres that let in monsoon breeze, helping maintain comfortable thermal levels throughout the year. The sloping front lawn opens up for theatre-style public screenings and talks. The volumes create thermal stacking of air and the massive floors and walls mitigate solar heat gain while allowing the winter sun to penetrate this south-west facing studio.
