Key to the transformation of a ruin into an off-grid house is the celebration of the contrast between old and new. Access to the main house is through a walled "Secret" garden with a pond and sculptures by the owner. The old stone remains are complemented by a new construction with wooden cladding. The displaced roof planes of the main house break up the volume and mimic the butterfly roof of the little annex. By creating a new well insulated volume inside the old remains, an extremely efficient construction can be erected, solar powered and heated with biomass from the surrounding forest.
